THE V8 Supercar have arrived with 24 trucks carrying $200 million worth of equipment. They are here for the state’s biggest sporting event – the V8 supercars – at Symmons Plains this weekend.

Some drivers arrived with their machines on the ferry and the others fly into Tasmania to collect their cars and travel to Symmons Plains.

The 28 drivers have started to start arrive and the rest will be here by Thursday, straight to the track.

Our b&b accommodation has been booked out this weekend for a little while now as fans are coming from all over to see the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Bliss N Eso & Birds of Toyko.

Luckily the weather has been amazing lately and the trend is set to continue this weekend. If you’re thinking about visiting Launceston, March is a great time to do it. The weather is hot but not overly so and there’s so many attractions throughout the city.

There are many paths you can take around the gorge, so here’s a quick overview and map showing you the main ones.

Cataract Gorge walking track map legend

• Basin Road (blue): The main road into the Gorge with plenty of parking right outside the gorge. It is a short 3 minute drive from Edenholme to the gorge, coming down the Basin Road at the end.
• Suggested track (green): This is a comfortable path across the Alexandra suspension bridge (pictured above), passing a bbq area, toilets, looking platform and The Gorge Restaurant before optionally turning right to follow the river to the King’s Bridge. An open area frequented by the peacocks and wildlife surrounds the restaurant.
• Alternate Paths (yellow): You’ll quite likely wish to explore the surroundings of the gorge further and there are many alternate paths, some of the main ones have been highlighted.
• Zig-zag hiking track (red): The zig-zag track is a very steep track for those feeling fit and adventurous. It does feature several looking platforms and connects to the streets at the top of the hill. There are many larger-than-normal steps and it can get quite muddy after some rain.
• Chairlift (orange): The chairlift is a 457m ride across the gorge spans across the basin, across the basin. It’s defintely something to try out while you’re there and is open everyday. View the chairlift pricing page for the rates.
• Duck reach track (purple): This path leaves the main gorge trail next to the suspension bridge and will take people to the Duck Reach Power Station (now a museum and interpretive centre). It takes about 45mins (one-way) to reach the power station.

As you can see below, you just need to:

1. Turn right onto Connaught Crescent.
2. Turn left onto Brougham St.
3. Turn right onto Basin Rd.
4. The Cataract Gorge is at the bottom of Basin Rd.

Tip: We’d advise driving, simply because been a natural formation carved into the hills, Basin Rd is quite steep.

Over the next few weeks we’ll explore the features of the gorge and the reasons why you need to see it when you’re in town.

The Victoria Room is the indulgence room of the house. It has a king size full tester four-poster bed and double spa bath to be seen and experienced by honeymooners and partners re-romancing their relationships. It is a room for the special occasion, enhanced by some special portraiture of the Dowager Queen.

The room is a partner to The Albert which is a self-contained studio suite. When combined, they make a luxurious holiday apartment for the mature family.

French influence is evident in The Marchioness’ room, decorated with a French serpentine bed of brass, porcelain, crystal and cast iron. The original bathroom which serves as its ensuite contains a deep claw-foot bath, a Victorian style vanity suite and a walk-in shower.

An antique mahogany and American oak wardrobe with a matching cheval dresser complement the decor.

The Governess’ is a ground floor room with an unusual barley-twist four poster bed of French Colonial vintage. The room features a glassed-in balcony that captures the morning sun, ideal for breakfasting alone (or together), but leading to the Grand lounge and dining room.

Our most recently decorated room, the Composers, accommodates up to three people.

This room derives its name from Captain Edward Ditcham who was at the time of building the house, the Master Warden of the Port of Launceston. He built the house on the same site as his Bone mill on the corner of Maitland St and Connaught Crescent.

A grand Victorian four-poster bed, king size, is a dominant feature of this room which is decorated with rich navy velvet curtains. The nautical decor includes memorabilia spanning a century. The room has a built-in corner ensuite of unusual design.

The Banker’s Room is masculine and original. A carved oak bed is the feature of this room complemented by an antique mahogany barreltop desk complete with two early local bank ledgers dating from the commencement of the building of the house.

A tasteful glass-walled bathroom with spa bath and separate toilet connects.

With adjoining doors to The Victoria next door, the Albert Suite has a Victorian half-tester bed and royal portraits, including rare prints of Prince Albert.

Ideal for the longer stay, you may use the additional separate entrance. There is a full kitchen (but, if desired, we offer to cook you breakfast), a tastefully decorated dressing room and bathroom with spa bath.

The Settlers Cottage is a self contained rustic cottage located in the grounds of the property. It provides serenity and private views of the ornamental garden. It includes two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, one with a double spa.

Our Connaught and Frankland apartments are self-contained, secluded apartments separate from the main buildings for privacy and comfort. These apartments can be sold together as a large apartment or separately.

The Frankland has the capacity to sleep up to 4 people (with 2 bunk beds) whereas the Connaught has a luxurious spa.
